Sprout Social alternatives: where to go and how to cancel without a surprise renewal
Eight destinations, one per reason to leave, and a seven-step exit plan.
The short answer: Agorapulse if your team lives in the social inbox and you want to pay less per person, Buffer if you want to pay per channel and give the whole team access, Metricool if you want scheduling and analytics for about $20 a month, Vista Social if you run an agency with lots of client profiles. One thing to know before you pick: on an annual Sprout contract, renewal is automatic, the non-renewal notice must land at least 30 days before the term ends, and prepaid fees are never refunded. We compared all eight destinations and checked their prices on each vendor's own pricing page in 2026.
Some links are affiliate links. The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.
Why so many teams leave Sprout Social
Sprout Social is a good product, and people who leave usually say so. Its reporting gets the most praise. Teams leave over the bill and the contract, rarely over quality. Six complaints keep coming back in reviews and on Reddit.
Per-seat pricing that multiplies
Every person who logs in pays for a seat: $79 a month on Essentials, $199 on Standard, $299 on Professional, $399 on Advanced, billed annually. Three people on Standard cost $597 a month, over $7,000 a year. In Reddit threads about Sprout, close to four comments in ten are about price.
Only 5 profiles on the first two plans
Essentials and Standard both stop at 5 social profiles. A brand on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube has used them all. Unlimited profiles only come with Professional, at $299 per seat.
Auto-renewal people did not expect
The terms say an annual subscription renews automatically for another year. On consumer review sites, most one-star reviews are about a contract that renewed without anyone meaning to, or a cancellation refused after the date.
No refunds, ever
Prepaid fees are not refunded: not on monthly, not on annual, not when you downgrade. Cancel mid-term and you pay to the end of it.
Key features sold as add-ons
Listening, Premium Analytics and Employee Advocacy cost extra, with no public price. Trellis Plus is listed at $28 per seat per month billed annually ($35 monthly). Some reviews accuse Sprout of hiding advertised features behind a paywall.
Support that depends on your size
Large accounts get a dedicated success manager. Smaller teams describe slow, unhelpful support, especially when they try to cancel. On software review sites, Sprout's value-for-money score sits well below its overall rating.

Sprout Social alternatives, tool by tool
For each tool: why move to it, who it's for, its limit, how to migrate and its entry price. Prices come from each vendor's pricing page, before tax. Watch the billing unit: Sprout charges per seat, others per channel, per brand or per plan.
The tools
Agorapulse: the same social inbox, for much less
TeamsWhy move to Agorapulse. It's the closest tool to Sprout in day-to-day use: a unified inbox for messages and comments, a shared calendar, reports. Standard is $79 per user per month billed annually ($99 monthly) and includes 10 profiles, twice what Sprout's Essentials gives you for the same seat price. Three people cost $237 a month instead of $597 on Sprout Standard.
Who it's for. A social team that answers comments and DMs every day and wants to keep the same workflow without the Sprout bill.
Who it's not for. A solo marketer who posts and never moderates: you'd be paying for an inbox you don't use.
Its limit. It's still priced per user. Professional is $119 billed annually, Advanced $149, and each profile over the 10 included adds $10 a month. Analytics history is kept 6 months on Standard, 12 on Professional and 24 above. Importing your history from another tool is only offered on the Custom plan, which is quote-based.
How to migrate. The 30-day trial needs no credit card, the same length as Sprout's. Start it six weeks before your Sprout term ends: enough time to reconnect profiles, run both tools side by side and still send your non-renewal notice on time.

- 30-day trial, no card
- Paid
- Standard $79/user billed annually
- Best for
- team moderation
- Limit
- 6-month history on Standard
Buffer: pay per channel, invite the whole team
Per channelWhy move to Buffer. Buffer bills each connected channel, never each person. Essentials is $5 per channel per month; Team is $10 per channel with unlimited users. With 5 channels on Team, your whole team publishes for $50 a month, however many people log in.
Who it's for. A freelancer or small brand posting to three to five networks, and any team that wants to give everyone access without buying seats.
Who it's not for. A team that used Sprout as its moderation hub and client-reporting engine: Buffer is a publishing tool first.
Its limit. The free plan keeps 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, 1 user and 30 days of analytics. An agency with forty channels ends up paying as much as with a flat plan.
How to migrate. Start on the free plan to reconnect your three main accounts, then open the 14-day trial of a paid plan to move everything over.
- Free
- 3 channels, 10 posts each
- Paid
- Essentials $5/channel/month
- Best for
- solo, small teams
- Limit
- light inbox and reports
Metricool: scheduling and analytics for about $20
BudgetWhy move to Metricool. Metricool doesn't bill per seat but per brand, and a brand groups all its networks. Starter covers 5 brands from $20 a month billed annually ($25 monthly). The 10-brand tier is $36.
Who it's for. A small business, creator or freelancer handling a few brands who wants the calendar and the numbers in one place. It's the biggest price gap on this page: $20 a month against $79 per seat.
Who it's not for. A team that needs roles and approval flows from day one: team features only arrive with Advanced, from $53 a month billed annually ($67 monthly) for 15 brands.
Its limit. The free plan is narrow: 1 brand, 20 posts a month, 30 days of analytics, and no LinkedIn or X. Prices are shown before tax.
How to migrate. Create one brand per client or business line, connect its networks, then reload your upcoming posts. Keep your Sprout report exports handy: Metricool starts your history from zero.

- Starter from $20/month billed annually

Vista Social: lots of profiles for an agency
AgenciesWhy move to Vista Social. Professional is $79 a month for 15 profiles and 3 users, total, not per seat. On Sprout, three people who need more than 5 profiles move up to Professional: 3 times $299.
Who it's for. An agency or marketing team running many client profiles that wants calendar, inbox and reports in one tool.
Who it's not for. Anyone looking for a lasting free plan: there's only a 14-day trial with no card. Social listening is also limited on the lower tiers.
Its limit. The real agency tier is often Advanced at $149 a month, and Scale goes to $349. Each tier caps the number of users, so you move up as the team grows.
How to migrate. Set up one workspace per client before reconnecting profiles, then sort your Sprout exports by client. Our Vista Social review breaks down what each plan unlocks.
- Free
- 14-day trial, no card
- Paid
- Professional $79/month, 3 users
- Best for
- multi-client agencies
- Limit
- no free plan
Hootsuite: the other big name, more accounts per seat
EnterpriseWhy move to Hootsuite. If leadership wants a brand as well known as Sprout, Hootsuite is the obvious one. Standard starts at $99 per user per month billed annually and includes 10 social accounts, twice the cap of Sprout's Essentials and Standard.
Who it's for. A team running 6 to 10 accounts that won't pay $299 per seat just to unlock unlimited profiles on Sprout.
Who it's not for. A small team leaving over price: Professional starts at $199 per user and Advanced goes up to $399. You'd change tools without changing the bill.
Its limit. No free plan, a 14-day trial only, and the same per-seat model as Sprout.
How to migrate. Reconnect your profiles during the trial, then rebuild your upcoming posts. Our guide to switching from Hootsuite shows what leaving it will look like later.
- Free
- 14-day trial
- Paid
- Standard from $99/user billed annually
- Best for

SocialBee: recycle evergreen content by category
EvergreenWhy move to SocialBee. SocialBee sorts your posts into categories and republishes them on a schedule. Bootstrap is $29 a month for 5 profiles and one seat, the same profile cap as Sprout's Essentials for well under half the price. Accelerate gets you 10 profiles for $49, and Pro is $99 with 3 seats.
Who it's for. A consultant, coach or small brand with evergreen content who wants it to rotate without rescheduling posts one by one.
Who it's not for. A team that moderates heavily: the inbox isn't the heart of the product.
Its limit. Each extra seat is $10 a month, and agency tiers climb fast: Pro50 at $179, Pro100 at $329, Pro150 at $449.
How to migrate. Sort your recurring posts by theme before loading them: each theme becomes a category. Our SocialBee review covers the tiers, and SocialBee vs Vista Social settles it for agencies.

Later: built for Instagram and TikTok
VisualWhy move to Later. Later is built around visuals: an image-based calendar, an Instagram grid preview, TikTok publishing. Starter is $18.75 a month billed annually for one social set; Growth is $37.50.
Who it's for. A fashion, beauty or restaurant brand that lives on Instagram and TikTok and mostly paid Sprout to schedule.
Who it's not for. A team posting heavily to LinkedIn or juggling many brands: each extra social set costs $11.25 a month.
Its limit. No real free plan, and Starter covers a single social set. Extra users are cheap at $3.75 a month each.
How to migrate. Pull your visuals first: Later works from its media library. Our Later review details each plan's limits.

Iconosquare: keep polished reports, for less
AnalyticsWhy move to Iconosquare. If reporting is what kept you on Sprout, Iconosquare puts analytics at the center. Launch is €33 a month (€396 a year) for 5 profiles, priced in euros.
Who it's for. A brand or agency that presents results every month and posts mainly to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
Who it's not for. A large team: each extra user costs €16 a month.
Its limit. Scale is €69 for 3 users, Excel €116 for 6. Billing in euros means your dollar cost moves with the exchange rate.
How to migrate. Export your last twelve months of Sprout reports as CSV: history doesn't carry over between tools, and those numbers become your baseline. Our Later vs Iconosquare comparison settles the choice between the two visual tools.

Leave Sprout Social in seven steps
Order matters: step one protects your budget, the rest protect your data. Start six weeks before your contract ends.
The steps
Find your renewal date and send the non-renewal notice
Day -45On an annual or invoiced contract, the non-renewal notice must arrive at least 30 days before the current term ends. Only the Account Owner can cancel: email your Customer Success Manager or successteam@sproutsocial.com, and keep the reply. Monthly plans cancel from the billing settings in your account.
Why first? One day late costs you a full year, with no refund.
- Notice
- 30 days before term end
- Who
- the Account Owner
Inventory what's running
Day -45List connected profiles, who has access, approval flows, saved replies, listening queries and scheduled reports. Export your profile list, which Sprout lets you download as a file.
No export covers your setup: anything you don't write down has to be rebuilt from memory.
- Export
- profile list
- Risk if skipped
- lost approval flow
Export your reports, period by period
Day -40Sprout doesn't offer a full export of all your data. Export each report as CSV for the numbers and PDF for presentation, profile by profile, covering at least the last twelve months. If you paid for Listening, write down your queries and export their results: nothing carries over.
No destination reimports this history (Agorapulse only does it on Custom). These files will be your only record.
- Formats
- CSV and PDF
- Missing
- no full data export
Back up the Smart Inbox and reviews
Day -40The Smart Inbox and customer reviews export as CSV. Do it for the period you care about, especially conversations still open with customers. Write down your saved replies too: they don't move.
- Format
- CSV
- Risk if skipped
- lost customer threads
Start the destination trial and reconnect profiles
Day -30Start the trial (30 days on Agorapulse, 14 on Buffer and Hootsuite), then reconnect each network one by one. You need an account with admin rights on every Facebook Page, Instagram professional account and LinkedIn Page. Then rebuild the roles and approvals from step 2.
- Who
- an admin of each page
- Risk if skipped
- profile that won't connect
Rebuild the calendar and run both tools
Day -30 to -1We found no official procedure for exporting scheduled posts: check your own account, otherwise rebuild them with your destination's bulk import, or by hand if there are only a few. Since nothing is refunded, keep Sprout running until the term ends, but delete each post once it's moved so nothing goes out twice.
- Duration
- until term end
- Risk if skipped
- posts published twice
Disconnect Sprout and revoke its access
Last dayDisconnect your profiles in Sprout, then remove Sprout's authorization from each network as well (Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok…). After the contract ends, Sprout can delete your account and content: the terms say 30 days, the help center says 90 days for paid accounts. Don't rely on either: get everything out first.
- Deletion
- 30 to 90 days after end
- Recovery
- not possible after

What makes a Sprout Social exit go wrong
The same mistakes show up again and again in reviews from people who left. These are the costly ones.
Cancelling 15 days out
The notice period is 30 days. A request two weeks before the end is too late: the contract rolls for a year, and nothing is refunded.
Asking the wrong person
Only the Account Owner can cancel. If that's someone who left the company, transfer ownership first.
Expecting a full export
There isn't one. Reports, the inbox and the profile list each export separately, as CSV or PDF.
Switching Sprout off too early
You've paid to the end of the term: keep access to check your destination and grab anything you missed.
Skipping the network-side revoke
Disconnecting a profile in Sprout isn't always enough. Remove the app in Meta and LinkedIn settings too.
Comparing prices in different units
$79 per seat, $10 per channel, $20 for 5 brands: redo the math with your real headcount and profile count.
- Renewal date noted, non-renewal sent at least 30 days ahead
- Account Owner identified
- Profile list, access and approvals exported
- Last twelve months of reports in CSV and PDF
- Smart Inbox and reviews exported as CSV
- Profiles reconnected by an admin at the destination
- Upcoming posts rebuilt and removed from Sprout
- Sprout's access revoked in each network
Sprout Social alternatives: common questions
Does Sprout Social have a free plan?
No. Sprout Social has no free plan, only a 30-day trial with no credit card. Nonprofits have a dedicated pricing page with a discount: ask for it before you compare, it can change the math.
How much does Sprout Social cost per month?
$79 to $399 per seat per month billed annually: Essentials $79 ($99 monthly), Standard $199, Professional $299, Advanced $399, Enterprise on quote. Add-ons stack on top: Trellis Plus is $28 per seat billed annually, $35 monthly.
What is the best free alternative to Sprout Social?
Buffer for 3 channels, Metricool for one brand with analytics (20 posts a month, no LinkedIn or X). Neither replaces Sprout's reporting, but both cover publishing. Our social media tools ranking covers the full field.
Sprout Social vs Agorapulse: which should you pick?
Agorapulse if you want the same inbox for less: $79 per user with 10 profiles, against $199 and 5 profiles on Sprout Standard. Sprout keeps the edge if your leadership expects its reports and you're on the higher plans with unlimited profiles.
How do you cancel Sprout Social without paying another year?
Send the non-renewal notice in writing at least 30 days before the term ends, from the Account Owner, to your Customer Success Manager or successteam@sproutsocial.com. Keep the reply. On a monthly plan, cancel in billing settings before the next charge.
Can you get your data back after leaving Sprout Social?
Not once the account is deleted: Sprout can erase everything within 30 days of the contract ending, and it can't be recovered. Export reports, the inbox and your profile list before the end date.
Which tool works best for an agency with many clients?
Vista Social or Agorapulse. Vista Social puts 15 profiles and 3 users in a $79 plan; Agorapulse gives 10 profiles per user. Our agency tools ranking goes further.
Is there a cheaper tool with Sprout-level reporting?
Closest on reports for less: Iconosquare from €33 a month for 5 profiles, or Agorapulse with 12 months of history on Professional at $119 per user. Keep your Sprout CSV exports either way, since no tool imports them.
