Indeed alternatives for employers: where to post jobs, and how to leave

Six options compared, a router by reason for leaving, and a seven-step exit plan.

The short answer: no single site replaces Indeed. You replace its volume with a mix. LinkedIn Jobs keeps pay per click with a daily or total budget you control. Wellfound posts startup jobs for $0. ZipRecruiter is the other high-volume board in the US, on a quote. And an applicant tracking system like Workable or JOIN posts everywhere while keeping applicants in your own pipeline. Before you cut anything, export your candidates: Indeed doesn't keep them for you.

Our ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

The real reasons

Why employers leave Indeed, and what still holds

Indeed still has huge reach, and direct employers can still post for free. People don't leave for lack of traffic. They leave because spend got hard to predict, because applicant quality disappoints, and because the rules change with little warning. Six reasons keep coming up, each one checked.

Pay per started application, with no way back

A sponsored job is now billed when a candidate starts applying: hitting Apply, an apply link, a chatbot or a QR code. A plain click on the ad no longer counts. Eligible jobs move to this model automatically, and Indeed says you can't switch them back to pay per click.

A budget decided by live auction

The price of an application is set in real time, based on demand for your role and location. A minimum budget per job can apply, and it varies by market. In the US, Indeed already pulled an earlier pay-per-application model that employers found too heavy to manage, and added billing caps.

Free posts that sink fast

Free jobs lose visibility over time while sponsored ones stay on top. Staffing agencies outside Japan lost free posting altogether, and a job targeting a wide area (a whole country or region) has to be sponsored. Indeed alone decides whether you count as an agency or a direct employer.

Unqualified applicants and no-shows

It's the top complaint in employer reviews: piles of applicants who don't match the job, and interviews nobody turns up to. When you pay per started application, every off-target applicant has a price. Volume, Indeed's main selling point, becomes a cost line.

ATS feeds switched off

Indeed cut free organic distribution from some multiposting tools. HelloWork, a French job board, announced legal action after its applicant tracking system lost organic posting to Indeed; the outcome isn't known. Only employers can still connect their own feed directly.

Your data stays with Indeed

Exporting candidates is gated. In France, the CSV export only opens to accounts that spent at least €4,000 over 12 months, with two-step verification on. It caps out at 1,000 candidates per file, 10,000 a day, and nothing older than 3 months. Indeed states it isn't responsible for keeping your records.

01

LinkedIn Jobs: qualified talent, billed per click

Pay per click

Why move there. LinkedIn kept what Indeed dropped: pay per click, under a daily or total budget you set. You know your maximum spend before the job goes live.

Who it fits. Professional, sales, tech and marketing roles, where candidates keep their profiles current.

Who it doesn't. Retail, warehouse and restaurant hiring: the audience is thin there, and every click costs.

The catch. One free active job at a time. Once you promote, the algorithm prices each click by location and competition, and views count as clicks. LinkedIn's own example: $10 a day for 30 days, so $300 at most. You're billed when the job closes, at 30 days, or when the balance hits $500.

How to switch. Post your free job first and keep it open at least 5 days. Add budget only once you see how many relevant applicants come in. Our guide to switching from LinkedIn covers its other limits.

Wellfound: free job posts for startups

Free

Why move there. Wellfound lists job posts at $0, for good. For a startup paying Indeed per started application on engineering roles, that's the most direct saving on this page.

Who it fits. Startups hiring engineers, designers, product people and early sales hires who want to work at a young company.

Who it doesn't. Established small businesses hiring hourly or local staff: the audience is startup-minded and tech-heavy.

The catch. The audience is narrow by design: startup roles, mostly tech. A free listing also does nothing for a role nobody in that world wants.

How to switch. Build a company profile with funding stage, team size and salary range, since candidates there filter on them. Then copy your open roles from Indeed, salary included.

ZipRecruiter: the other high-volume US board

US volume

Why move there. If you hire hourly or mid-level staff across the US and still need a big funnel, ZipRecruiter is the board people put next to Indeed. It's how you keep volume without depending on a single auction.

Who it fits. US small and mid-size businesses hiring hourly or mid-level staff in volume.

Who it doesn't. Employers outside the US: it isn't a fit for hiring in France or most of Europe.

The catch. No public price list. You get a quote, so compare it with what you paid per relevant applicant on Indeed before you sign anything long.

How to switch. Ask for a short trial on two or three of your hardest roles and track cost per relevant applicant for a month. Run it in parallel with free Indeed posts, not instead of them.

Workable: one pipeline for the whole team

Team hiring

Why move there. Workable is an applicant tracking system: it posts your job to many boards at once and pulls every applicant into one pipeline your managers can score. Indeed becomes one source among several, and the data sits with you. Our ATS for small business ranking gives it 3.2 out of 5.

Who it fits. Companies with several hiring managers and steady hiring all year.

Who it doesn't. A small business filling two roles a year: $299 a month buys a lot of free posts you'd be making anyway.

The catch. Pricing follows company size, not usage. Standard starts at $299 a month, Premier at $599, so you pay for the bracket even in quiet months.

How to switch. Import your exported Indeed candidates during the trial, then connect your free Indeed feed so new applicants land in Workable directly.

JOIN: multipost and keep your candidates

Pay per job

Why move there. JOIN, a German vendor, posts your job to 10+ free boards at once, with 250+ paid boards as add-ons. Applicants land in your account, not Indeed's. Our ATS for small business ranking gives it 3.9 out of 5.

Who it fits. Small teams opening a few roles a year who want to pay per job, not per applicant.

Who it doesn't. Teams running more than 15 roles at once: that's Enterprise territory, on a quote.

The catch. Prices are in euros: €17 per active job per month billed annually, €20 monthly. Candidate export is only on Advanced, at €34 per job. You're leaving Indeed to own your data, so don't rebuild the same lock.

How to switch. The 14-day Advanced trial covers 5 jobs with no card. Post your open roles and check where applicants actually come from before you pay.

Teamtailor: when the careers page does the hiring

Employer brand

Why move there. If Indeed sends you the wrong people, the fix may be on your side: a careers site that shows who you are. Teamtailor, a Swedish vendor, builds it with drag and drop, and every job links back to it. Our ATS ranking gives it 3.6 out of 5.

Who it fits. Companies whose real bottleneck is attracting the right applicants, not sorting them.

Who it doesn't. A tight budget with few open roles: a cheaper tracker plus free posts does the job.

The catch. Quote only, with no published price. The frame is generous: unlimited jobs and users, and built-in AI with no usage cap. Approval flows and multi-brand setups cost extra.

How to switch. Prepare photos, team stories and salary ranges before the sales call. Then point your free Indeed posts at your new careers page.

Migration plan

Leaving Indeed in seven steps

You don't close your Indeed account: you stop depending on it. What you move is your candidates, your live jobs and the way you measure. Plan on a month, most of it measuring.

01

Export your candidates before you cut

Day 1

If your account qualifies for export, turn on two-step verification and export from the Candidates tab: one CSV per batch of 1,000, up to 10,000 a day. Only candidates from the last 3 months come out, on jobs older than 10 days. If you don't qualify, download résumés for active candidates by hand.

Time

Limit
3 months of history
02

Sort out candidate privacy

Day 1

Indeed keeps nothing for you: exported résumés become your responsibility. Set a retention period for your talent pool, tell imported candidates where their data now lives, and ask consent before keeping a profile beyond the role they applied for.

Time
half a day

you, plus legal if you have it
03

Let sponsored jobs run out

Week 1

Don't kill a campaign halfway: applications already started are billed. Lower budgets on live jobs, let them finish, then switch them to free. Write down each job's cost per application on the way out: that's your baseline.

Week 2

Past three open roles at once, an applicant tracking system saves you from retyping every post. Before signing, check two lists: the boards it really connects to, and whether you can export candidates when you leave. With JOIN, export is Advanced only. Our ATS ranking sorts the options.

06

Keep Indeed free, as one channel among several

Week 2

Leaving Indeed doesn't mean vanishing from it. As a direct employer, keep your free posts with a link to your careers page so applicants land with you. Skip country-wide or region-wide postings: those must be sponsored. A specific city stays free.

Measure for a month, channel by channel

Migration pitfalls

What makes leaving Indeed go wrong

Leaving Indeed rarely fails on day one. It fails a month later, when an urgent role gets zero applicants or you look for a résumé that's gone. Six traps keep coming back.

Leaving without an export

Export only reaches back 3 months and is gated by spend. Wait until your last contract ends to think about it, and part of your talent pool is already out of reach. Export on day one, even if you stay a few more weeks.

An ATS that misses your boards

Vendors quote 10, 160 or 250 boards. The useful question is shorter: does it post where your candidates are, including free Indeed and LinkedIn? A long list of boards nobody in your field reads is worth nothing.

Confusing reach with applicants

Being visible on ten boards guarantees no résumés. Teams that switch to multiposting without fixing their posts report weeks of silence. What brings people in: a clear job title, the salary, the exact location.

Signing a year before you compare

Several boards and tools sell annual plans. Start with a month or a trial and compare cost per relevant applicant with your Indeed history. Twelve months on a channel that doesn't work costs more than the auction you left.

The agency label that kills free posts

If you recruit for clients, Indeed treats you as an agency and free posting disappears. If you're a direct employer flagged as an agency by mistake, push back before you migrate everything: free Indeed is worth keeping.

Tracking views instead of hires

Every board will show you a flattering views chart. The only number that compares two channels is cost per relevant applicant, then cost per hire. Start logging it in week one.

  • Candidates exported, or active résumés downloaded by hand
  • Retention period set and imported candidates informed
  • Sponsored campaigns run to the end
  • Free LinkedIn job live on your most qualified role
  • ATS picked after checking connected boards and export
  • Free Indeed posts kept, linking to your careers page
  • Salary shown on every post
  • Cost per relevant applicant logged for each channel
FAQ · 8 questions

Indeed alternatives: frequently asked questions

  • What is the best Indeed alternative for small business?

It depends on the role. LinkedIn Jobs for professional hires with a capped budget, Wellfound for startup roles at $0, ZipRecruiter if you still need US volume. Past three open roles, add an applicant tracking system so every applicant lands in one place you own.

  • Are there free job posting sites besides Indeed?

Yes. LinkedIn lets you keep one free active job, and Wellfound job posts cost $0. Tip: put the salary in every free post, it's the cheapest way to lift applicant quality.

  • Is Indeed still free for employers?

For direct employers posting a job in a specific city, yes. Not for staffing agencies, and not for country-wide or region-wide jobs, which must be sponsored. Free posts also lose visibility over time.

  • How much does Indeed cost per application?

There's no fixed price. Indeed bills per started application, and the price is set by live auction based on demand for your role and location. A minimum budget per job can apply depending on the market. Set a hard budget before you sponsor anything.

  • Can I switch back to pay per click on Indeed?

Not for eligible jobs: they move to pay per started application automatically, with no option to go back. If you want pay per click with a clear cap, LinkedIn Jobs still offers it with a daily or total budget.

  • How do I export my candidates from Indeed?

Through the CSV export in the Candidates tab, if your account qualifies and two-step verification is on. You get 1,000 candidates per file, from the last 3 months only. If you don't qualify, save résumés one by one before you stop sponsoring.

  • Is Glassdoor an alternative to Indeed?

No. Glassdoor job posts now run through Indeed: a job you pay to post on Indeed also appears on Glassdoor. Moving from one to the other changes neither the bill nor the audience.

  • Indeed or ZipRecruiter: which one for US hiring?

Use both for volume roles rather than picking one. Indeed keeps free organic posts for direct employers; ZipRecruiter works on a quote. Run the same role on each for a month and keep the one with the lower cost per relevant applicant.
