The best customer data platform for ecommerce, by store size
One profile per shopper, fed by your store, your email tool and your retail locations. The bill runs from $0 to $60K+ a year. Here's where you land.
A customer data platform (CDP) gathers what you know about each shopper into one profile and uses it to segment and trigger messages. Most US roundups list enterprise tools without a single price, or quote numbers you can't trace. We started from store size instead, and kept only prices we could read on the vendor's own pages.
The short answer. Small Shopify store with one email tool? You may not need a CDP: Shopify includes segments and 10,000 free emails a month. Growing store that wants sharp segments? Klaviyo, free up to 250 active profiles. A developer and several tools to feed? Segment, from $120 a month. Tight budget? Omnisend. Selling into Europe and need EU hosting? Brevo. High-traffic retailer? Bloomreach, from $60K a year.
The catch nobody mentions: most CDPs bill by profiles or tracked users, and bots or anonymous traffic can inflate that number fast.
The ranking is editorial: a sponsored spot is always labeled on its card, and no affiliate link changes a score.

How we ranked these CDPs
Search "best customer data platform for ecommerce" and you'll get agency blogs, a vendor's own list, and roundups quoting prices you can't find on any official page. Few of them tell you which tools connect to WooCommerce, and almost none say that a small store may not need a CDP at all.
We read each vendor's official pricing page, or our own review when we have one, plus the integration pages to check which store platforms connect without a developer. Then we read merchant reviews on the Shopify App Store, community forums and review sites, starting with the complaints: runaway bills, phantom profiles, prices that change between two pages.
Three families meet on this page. CDPs built into email tools (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Brevo) fit most stores. The pure CDP (Segment) feeds many tools if you have a developer. Retail suites (Bloomreach, Insider One) target bigger brands. The score shown is the tool's score across all our pages; the rank follows the criteria below, which is why Omnisend sits behind Segment despite a higher score: its data layer is lighter.
- Store connectionShopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce: a CDP that won't connect without a developer is a project, not a tool. Hence the top weight.30%
- Readable, predictable pricePublic price, billing unit (profiles, MTUs, emails) and how fast the bill drifts as your list grows.25%
- Unified profile and segmentationSource reconciliation, deduplication, RFM segments, retail data.20%
- ActivationWhat you can trigger directly: email, SMS, WhatsApp, ads, onsite.15%
- Data hosting and complianceStated hosting region, GDPR, access control.10%

Klaviyo
Klaviyo started as email and SMS for ecommerce. Its customer database, the Klaviyo Data Platform, comes with the standard product: every order, click and visit from a known shopper lands on one profile, and you segment on it without exporting anything. For most stores, that's the whole job a CDP is hired to do.
It plugs into Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce (Magento), Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Wix with no developer, and lists more than 400 apps. The paid email tier starts at $20 a month for 251 to 500 contacts, and paid plans have no send or profile limits on that tier.
Advanced KDP is where Klaviyo becomes a full CDP: fuzzy deduplication (typos, email aliases), RFM scoring (recency, frequency, monetary value), custom objects, and warehouse sync with Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift, S3 and Azure. It's billed separately on your total profiles, unsubscribed and suppressed ones included. The 30-day trial doesn't roll into a paid plan on its own.
Two complaints keep coming back from merchants. Billing follows profile count, and a wave of bot signups can blow it up: one store owner went from roughly 16,000 to 65,000 profiles overnight and got a bill above $900, then found downgrading much harder than upgrading. And Klaviyo doesn't keep anonymous visitors, who make up most of your traffic, so you'll need a second tool to analyze or personalize for them.
- One customer profile included in the platform
- Native Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce
- Advanced: RFM, custom objects, warehouse sync
- ✓The easiest CDP to connect to a store
- ✓Merchants praise segmentation and abandoned cart flows
- ✓Free to start, 30-day trial on Advanced
- ✗Profile-based billing that bots can inflate
- ✗Anonymous visitors aren't stored
- ✗Downgrading is harder than upgrading
Our top pick for a growing store that wants usable customer data without a tech project. Clean your profiles monthly, and only add Advanced for a clear need like RFM or a warehouse.
Twilio Segment
Segment doesn't send email. It's plumbing: it collects events from your site, app and servers, cleans them, and routes them to your other tools. That's the original meaning of "CDP", and it's why most US roundups put Segment first.
Its pricing is one of the few you can actually read. Free covers 1,000 monthly tracked users (MTUs, Segment's billing unit), two sources, unlimited destinations and one warehouse, with 10 seats. Team starts at $120 a month for 10,000 MTUs, with a 14-day trial and unlimited sources. You can host data in an EU or a US region.
The trade-offs are real. You need a developer to instrument events, and an activation tool next to it (Klaviyo, Omnisend, Brevo) to send anything. One reviewer sums it up: very reliable and easy to integrate, but expensive for a simple use. A competitor's founder adds that MTU billing hurts when lots of anonymous visitors fire few events, which is exactly how store traffic looks (take that with a grain of salt, he sells the alternative).
On Shopify, confirm the source setup before you sign: the pricing pages list web, mobile, server and cloud app sources, not Shopify by name.
- Free up to 1,000 monthly tracked users
- Unlimited destinations on every plan
- EU or US data region
- ✓Public, readable pricing
- ✓Feeds every tool from one stream
- ✓Rock solid once it's set up
- ✗Sends nothing itself: you need a second tool
- ✗Needs a developer to set up
- ✗MTU billing punishes anonymous-heavy traffic
Pick it when your problem is moving data between tools, not sending campaigns. Prototype on Free before moving to Team.
Omnisend
Omnisend isn't a CDP in the strict sense, and it doesn't claim to be. It's ecommerce email and SMS with one big strength for this topic: unlimited segmentation on every plan, including Free, with prebuilt segments, customer lifecycle stages and an AI segment builder.
It connects to Shopify, Shopify Plus and WooCommerce, with 330+ integrations. Free covers 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Standard costs $16 a month at 500 contacts and Pro $59 a month at 2,500 contacts. The 30% discount only applies when you prepay 3 months, so budget the full price.
Pricing has been a sore point in merchant reviews. Some complain the Pro price on the Shopify listing didn't match the website and "jumped" to $59, which Omnisend acknowledged. Segmentation and automation get consistent praise.
- Unlimited segmentation on every plan
- Lifecycle stages and prebuilt segments
- Shopify, Shopify Plus, WooCommerce, 330+ integrations
- ✓Full segmentation even on Free
- ✓Quick for a small team to pick up
- ✓Pay-as-you-go SMS
- ✗No multi-source identity resolution like a true CDP
- ✗30% discount only on 3 prepaid months
- ✗Reported price gaps between listing and site
The best starting point if you want sharp segments without a CDP budget. Budget the full price, not the discounted one.
Brevo
Brevo, the French email platform formerly called Sendinblue, also sells a customer data platform: the Brevo Data Platform. It pulls data from your store and other tools into one profile, then puts it to work in Brevo campaigns.
Native connectors cover Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento (Adobe Commerce), Salesforce and HubSpot CRMs, BigQuery and Snowflake warehouses, a REST API and file imports. On the security side, Brevo lists GDPR compliance, ISO 27001, role-based access, audit trails and EU data hosting. It's the only vendor here that states EU hosting on its CDP page, which matters if you sell to European shoppers.
The CDP itself has no public price: you book a demo. On the public grid, Pro ($499 a month from 150,000 emails, 10 users, contact scoring) is pitched at data and AI teams, and Enterprise targets accounts above one million contacts with custom objects and multiple accounts.
For a small store, Starter at $9 or Standard at $18 already gives you a segmentable contact base. The Data Platform pays off when you have several sources to reconcile.
- EU data hosting, ISO 27001
- Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, Salesforce, HubSpot connectors
- Email, SMS and WhatsApp in one account
- ✓Only vendor here stating EU hosting on its CDP page
- ✓Cheap email plans to start
- ✓Strong fit for stores selling in Europe
- ✗Data Platform price only on a demo
- ✗Big jump from Standard to Pro at $499
- ✗Fewer native store platforms listed than Klaviyo
The right call if EU hosting weighs in your decision or you already send with Brevo. Get the Data Platform quote in writing before comparing it to Klaviyo.
Bloomreach
Bloomreach bundles a CDP, a marketing platform and a product search engine built for commerce. The vendor is upfront about who it's for: most smaller customers invest $60K+ a year and serve 500K+ monthly visitors. Its pricing page even says it isn't for anyone looking for a free tool or a lightweight email platform.
You can start with a single product (marketing, search or a conversational agent) and add the rest later. It lists 175+ integrations including Shopify, BigCommerce, Snowflake and Segment, and assigns a named customer success manager.
You'll see lower "Shopify app" figures on third-party sites. The official page doesn't back them up, so budget from $60K.
- CDP, marketing and product search from one vendor
- 175+ integrations including Shopify and Snowflake
- Named customer success manager
- ✓Deep feature set for high-traffic retail
- ✓Can start with one module
- ✓Honest about its entry price
- ✗$60K a year minimum: out of reach for most SMBs
- ✗No free plan
- ✗Plan for an implementation project
For a high-traffic retailer that wants everything under one roof. Under 500K monthly visitors, Klaviyo does the job for a fraction of the cost.
Insider One
Insider One pitches itself as AI with an integrated customer data platform. Where Klaviyo starts from email, Insider starts from personalization: website, app, on-site search, email, SMS and WhatsApp, all driven by the same profiles.
The Shopify app is free to install, but extra charges apply and no pricing is published, so everything goes through sales. That's the main limit for a store that needs to budget. Its users rate it highly in the CDP category.
WhatsApp support is a real plus if you sell in markets where it's the main messaging channel.
- Integrated CDP plus personalization on 6 channels
- WhatsApp and on-site search in the product
- Shopify app available
- ✓Widest channel coverage in this ranking
- ✓Highly rated by its users
- ✓Personalizes the site, not just emails
- ✗No public pricing
- ✗Oversized for a small store
- ✗Charges on top of the free Shopify install
Pit it against Bloomreach if cross-channel personalization is your goal. Ask for a quote broken down by channel.
Do you actually need a CDP?
The question vendor roundups skip. Among Shopify merchants, the common advice is to start with what the platform includes, then move up when segmentation pays for itself. Here are the three tiers.
Tier 1: Shopify or your email tool is enough
One store, one email tool, a few thousand customers. Shopify includes customer segments and email campaigns on every plan, with 10,000 free emails a month. Predictive features in CDPs need a long order history: you wouldn't get much out of them yet.
Tier 2: a CDP built into your email tool
Your list is growing and you want segments by purchase frequency, abandoned cart flows and SMS. Klaviyo, Omnisend or Brevo keep profiles and activation in one place. That's the right level for most growing stores.
Tier 3: a separate CDP
Several stores, retail locations, an app, a CRM, a warehouse. Now you need to reconcile identities across sources: Segment or Hightouch with a technical team, Bloomreach or Insider One with vendor support.
- List your customer data sources: if there's only one, stay at tier 1
- Check your store platform appears in the native integrations
- Ask for the billing unit: profiles, active profiles, MTUs or emails
- Get the data hosting region in writing
What a CDP costs at your size
An entry price means nothing without the billing unit. Klaviyo counts profiles, Segment counts monthly tracked users, Brevo counts emails sent. All amounts before tax.
Small store: $0 to a few dozen a month
Shopify: segments included from Basic ($29/month billed yearly), 10,000 free emails, then $1 per 1,000. Klaviyo: free up to 250 active profiles, $20/month for 251 to 500 contacts. Omnisend: free up to 250 contacts, then $16/month. Brevo: Starter $9 or Standard $18 a month.
Growing brand: a few hundred a month
Segment Team: $120/month for 10,000 MTUs, then $10 to $12 per extra 1,000. Klaviyo Advanced KDP: separate subscription based on all your profiles, suppressed ones included. Brevo Pro: $499/month from 150,000 emails.
Retailer: $60K a year and up
Bloomreach says its smaller customers invest $60K+ a year. Insider One and Segment's full CDP are quote-only. Tealium, mParticle, Salesforce Data Cloud and Adobe Real-Time CDP target enterprises, also on quote.
- Divide the yearly bill by your active customers
- Ask what happens when you go over quota
- Get a price for each extra store or brand
- Check whether unsubscribed and suppressed profiles count
Other options you'll run into, and when they're worth it
These come up in every search. Some are the right answer for a specific profile; others target enterprises.
The options
Shopify alone: the no-CDP option
IncludedCustomer segments and email campaigns come with every plan: Basic $29/month billed yearly ($39 monthly), Grow $79 ($105), Advanced $299 ($399), Plus from $2,300. Shopify Messaging includes 10,000 emails per calendar month (abandoned cart emails don't count), then $1 per 1,000 up to 300,000. Shopify Audiences is Plus only.

Hightouch: the composable CDP
WarehouseHightouch reads your data from your warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery) and syncs it to 300+ tools. Free Basic Reverse ETL covers 2 active syncs with unlimited destinations and seats. The Composable CDP plan is usage-based, on demo. No warehouse, no data team? Skip it.

- 2 active syncs
Splio and Actito: the European retail suites
QuoteSplio (France) documents a PrestaShop module and a Shopify connector, sells loyalty as an add-on, and is quote-only. Actito (Belgium) sells two plans by active profiles: Standard up to 100,000 and Advanced up to 500,000, also without public prices. Worth a look for retailers with European stores.

- Quote only
Tealium, mParticle, Salesforce, Adobe: enterprise CDPs
QuoteThese names fill many roundups. They're built for companies with a dedicated data team and an integration budget. Even for a large store, Bloomreach or Insider One cover the need with a more commerce-first approach. Ometria, a UK retail CDP with Shopify and Magento connectors, publishes no pricing either.

Ecommerce CDP · FAQ
What is a customer data platform for ecommerce?
It's software that merges everything you know about each shopper (orders, site visits, email clicks, in-store purchases) into one profile, then uses it to segment and trigger messages. For most stores, the CDP built into Klaviyo or Omnisend covers this without a separate tool. What's the difference between a CDP and a CRM?
A CRM tracks relationships your team logs by hand, like deals and support tickets. A CDP collects behavioral data automatically from every source. In ecommerce, the CDP drives segments and campaigns; the CRM drives sales follow-up and service. How much does a CDP cost for an online store?
Anywhere from $0 to $60K+ a year. Klaviyo, Omnisend and Segment have free plans; Segment Team starts at $120/month; Bloomreach says its smaller customers invest $60K+ a year. Insider One and Brevo's Data Platform are quote-only, so always ask for a price at your profile count.Do I need a CDP if I'm on Shopify?
Not while you have one store and one email tool. Shopify includes customer segments and 10,000 free emails a month on every plan. A CDP earns its cost once you need to reconcile several sources: retail stores, multiple sites, an app, a CRM.What is a composable CDP?
A CDP that doesn't store your data itself: it reads it from your warehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery) and syncs it to your tools. Hightouch works this way, with a free plan capped at 2 active syncs. It assumes you already have a warehouse and a data team.Does a CDP track anonymous visitors?
Not always. Klaviyo doesn't keep anonymous visitors, even though they're most of a store's traffic. Segment tracks them but counts them toward MTU billing. If personalizing for unknown visitors matters, ask about it in the demo. How long does it take to set up a CDP?
Less time with a built-in CDP like Klaviyo or Omnisend: the app connects to your store without a developer. Segment or Hightouch take more work, since a developer has to define and instrument events. Bloomreach and Insider run as vendor-led projects. Is Segment worth it for a small store?
Usually not on its own. Segment sends nothing, so you'd still pay for an email tool, plus a developer's time. Below a few thousand customers, Klaviyo's built-in profile does more for less; Segment shines once three or more tools need the same data.
