CloudConvert n8n integrationAutomate CloudConvert with n8n.

Files land in a workflow and have to be converted, compressed or locked down before anyone can use them. The CloudConvert n8n integration puts that work in one node: 17 operations across 5 resources, from PDF merging to website capture. There is no trigger on its side; the workflow starts elsewhere.

Community node This node is not shipped with n8n: it is a community package (@cloudconvert/n8n-nodes-cloudconvert) you install from Settings › Community nodes on a self-hosted instance. npm

Why automate

What does the CloudConvert n8n integration actually do?

CloudConvert turns a file into another file: a different format, a smaller size, a searchable scan, a watermarked copy. The n8n node wraps that API so a workflow can do it between two other steps, without a person downloading anything. One node, 5 resources (Command, File, Metadata, PDF, Website) and 17 operations, in node version 1.

Take invoices arriving as attachments. A workflow reads the inbox with Gmail, passes the binary file to file.convert to get a clean PDF, then runs pdf.pdf/ocr so the scanned ones become searchable. The output goes back into the flow as binary data, ready for storage or for a second CloudConvert call.

Second pattern: monthly reporting. A workflow pulls the rows it needs from Google Sheets, renders each report, then uses file.archive to bundle everything into one ZIP and file.thumbnail to produce a preview image for the page that lists them in Notion. Nobody opens a conversion site by hand.

Third pattern: monitoring a public page. On a schedule, website.capture-website renders a URL as PDF or as a JPG screenshot, and the file is posted to a channel with Slack. Same idea for pricing pages, status pages, or a landing page you want dated proof of.

When an operation is not in the list, the HTTP Request node calls any CloudConvert API endpoint and reuses the same credential through predefined authentication. That is the right move for parts of the API the node does not cover, and it keeps the credential in one place. The trade offs between running this yourself and paying per operation are laid out in the n8n review.

Two limits worth knowing before building. CloudConvert has no trigger node in n8n, so the workflow has to start with a Schedule Trigger on a fixed interval, an n8n Webhook called by another service, or the trigger of another tool. And because this is a community node, it installs on a self hosted instance; n8n Cloud only accepts verified community nodes.

Connect

How do you connect CloudConvert to n8n?

  1. 01

    Install the community node

CloudConvert does not ship with n8n. Open Settings, then Community nodes, and install the npm package @cloudconvert/n8n-nodes-cloudconvert (version 1.1.1). This works on a self hosted instance, whether n8n runs through Docker or npm. On n8n Cloud, the hosted offer run by n8n, only verified community nodes can be installed. Once the package is in, CloudConvert appears in the node search like any other node.

  2. 02

    Create the credential

Go to the Credentials menu and add a CloudConvert credential. Two authentication methods exist: OAuth2 (Recommended), where CloudConvert hands n8n a token after you approve the connection, and API Key, where you paste a key from your CloudConvert account. A credential is created once and reused across every workflow, so a second file pipeline does not need a second key.

  3. 03

Pick it in the node and run once

Drop the CloudConvert node into a workflow and select the credential from its dropdown. Choose a resource, then an operation, and point Binary Property at the field holding the file, usually data from the node before it. Execute the node on one real item and look at the output binary before wiring the rest of the flow behind it.

Command

1 operation
01

Execute command

command.command

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Runs a custom ffmpeg, ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick command on the input file, which covers anything the ready made operations do not.

Key parameters

  • Command: the base command to execute, for example ffmpeg or convert; the supported commands are listed in the CloudConvert docs.
  • Engine: FFmpeg, ImageMagick or GraphicsMagick.
  • Arguments: input files are read from /input/{taskName}/ and output must be written to /output/.
  • Capture Console Output: returns the console output in the result, which is how you debug a failing command.
Use cases
re-encode a recorded meeting to libx264 so it plays everywhere, using an arguments string built in the node.

File

5 operations
02

Add watermark to a file

file.watermark

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Stamps a watermark onto a PDF, an image or a video, and returns the marked copy while the original stays untouched.

Key parameters

  • Text: the text used as watermark, often an expression such as {{ $json.state }}.
  • Font Size: required, and worth testing on the largest page format you handle.
  • Image URL: a PNG, JPG or SVG to use instead of text, paired with Watermark Image.
  • Opacity: a percentage, where 100 means fully visible.
  • Vertical Position and Horizontal Position: top, center or bottom, and left, center or right.
Use cases
mark every contract draft before it leaves the workflow, so nobody signs the wrong version.
03

Convert a file

file.convert

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

The core operation: one file in, the same content in another format out.

Key parameters

  • Output Format: the format to convert to, picked from the dropdown.
  • Input File Name: the filename with its extension, which is how CloudConvert knows what it received.
  • Binary Property: the binary field carrying the file to convert.
  • Additional Options: a JSON dictionary of extra options added to the converting task; the CloudConvert job builder generates them for you.
Use cases
a supplier sends spreadsheets in whatever format their tool exports, and the workflow normalizes all of them before anything reads the data.
04

Create archive

file.archive

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Bundles several files into a single archive, so the workflow carries one item instead of eight.

Key parameters

  • Output Format: the archive format, ZIP, RAR or another supported one.
  • Input File Contents: the text content uploaded when the file is not binary.
  • Binary Input Data: switch it on to take the files from a binary field instead.
  • Input File Name: the name with extension, which becomes the entry inside the archive.
Use cases
gather the month's exports into one ZIP before a single email leaves, rather than sending each attachment separately.
05

Create a thumbnail

file.thumbnail

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Produces a small preview image of a file, useful when a list needs to show something before the file is opened.

Key parameters

  • Width and Height: the thumbnail size in pixels.
  • Fit: Max keeps the image inside the box without enlarging a smaller one, Crop fills the box and cuts the excess, Scale forces both dimensions.
  • Output Format: the image format returned.
  • Binary Property: the field holding the source file.
Use cases
generate a cover for each uploaded document so a catalog page loads previews instead of full PDFs.
06

Optimize a file

file.optimize

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Compresses a file to reduce its size without changing its format, which matters when the next step has an attachment ceiling.

Key parameters

  • Binary Property: the binary field holding the file to compress.
  • Binary Input Data: on means the file comes from that binary field, off means CloudConvert uses Input File Contents.
  • Additional Options: a JSON dictionary of options added to the converting task, generated with the CloudConvert job builder.
Use cases
shrink product photos coming out of a form before they are pushed to a storage bucket and paid for by the gigabyte.

Metadata

2 operations
07

Get metadata from a file

metadata.metadata

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Reads the metadata CloudConvert can extract from a file and returns it as JSON, so the next node can branch on it.

Key parameters

  • Input File Name: the filename including extension.
  • Binary Property: the binary field containing the file to inspect.
  • Binary Input Data: leave it on when the file arrives from a previous node rather than as text.
Use cases
sort incoming documents by what the file itself declares, instead of trusting whatever the sender typed in the email subject.
08

Write metadata to a file

metadata.metadata/write

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Writes metadata into the file and returns the updated copy, the mirror image of reading it.

Key parameters

  • Metadata: a JSON dictionary of keys and values to write, for example Title, Author, Creator or Producer.
  • Input File Contents: the text content when the file is uploaded directly.
  • Binary Property: the field holding the file to rewrite.
Use cases
set a proper Title and Author on every PDF a workflow generates, so the documents stay identifiable once they are out of n8n.

PDF

8 operations
09

Add OCR layer to PDF

pdf.pdf/ocr

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Adds a text layer over a scanned PDF, which turns a picture of a page into something you can search and copy from.

Key parameters

  • Languages: a comma separated list of language codes, for example eng, deu.
  • Auto Orient: detects and corrects page orientation before the OCR pass.
  • Binary Property: the binary field holding the scanned PDF.
Use cases
a pile of scanned delivery notes becomes searchable, and a downstream node can then extract the order number from the text.
10

Convert PDF to PDF/A

pdf.pdf/a

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Rewrites a PDF into the archival PDF/A family, the format record keeping rules usually ask for.

Key parameters

  • Conformance Level: PDF/A-1B, PDF/A-2B or PDF/A-3B.
  • Binary Property: the field carrying the PDF to convert.
  • Binary Input Data: on when the PDF comes from the previous node as binary data.
Use cases
convert signed documents to the conformance level your archive expects, at the moment they are filed rather than years later.
11

Decrypt PDF

pdf.pdf/decrypt

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Removes the protection from a password protected PDF and returns a readable copy for the rest of the workflow.

Key parameters

  • Password: the password of the encrypted file, usually pulled from a credential store rather than typed in the node.
  • Input File Contents: the text content when the file is uploaded as text.
  • Binary Property: the binary field holding the locked PDF.
Use cases
bank statements arrive locked every month, and no parsing node can read them until this step has run.
12

Encrypt PDF

pdf.pdf/encrypt

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Locks a PDF and, on top of the password, decides what a reader is allowed to do with it.

Key parameters

  • Set Password: the password required to open the file.
  • Set Owner Password: the owner password for permissions; with it, every protection can be removed again.
  • Allow Print and Allow Modify: the permitted levels, for example full and form.
  • Allow Extract and Allow Accessibility: copying content, and screen reader support.
Use cases
payslips go out locked, with accessibility left on so the document stays usable.
13

Extract pages from PDF

pdf.pdf/extract-pages

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Pulls selected pages out of a PDF and returns them as a new file, leaving the source document alone.

Key parameters

  • Pages: single pages or ranges, for example 1,2,5-7; numbering starts at 1.
  • Binary Property: the field holding the PDF to cut.
  • Binary Input Data: on when the PDF is the binary output of an earlier node.
Use cases
keep only the signature pages of a long agreement to send them for counter signature, without shipping the full contract.
14

Merge files to PDF

pdf.pdf/merge

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Combines several files into a single PDF, in the order the items reach the node. No parameter is required on this one, which makes it the simplest operation of the node and the easiest to slot at the end of a branch that has collected files from different places.

Use cases
a quote, the general terms and an appendix arrive from three separate steps, and the customer receives one document instead of three attachments to open in the right order.
15

Rotate PDF pages

pdf.pdf/rotate-pages

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Turns single pages or every page of a PDF, which fixes documents that were fed into the scanner the wrong way round.

Key parameters

  • Rotation: the angle to apply, for example +90, -90 or 180.
  • Pages: the pages or ranges to rotate, such as 1,2,5-7, with numbering starting at 1.
  • Binary Property: the binary field holding the file.
Use cases
straighten the landscape pages of a scanned plan set before an OCR step, which reads upright text far better.
16

Split PDF into pages

pdf.pdf/split-pages

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Breaks a PDF into one file per page, so a batch document becomes a list of items the workflow can loop over.

Key parameters

  • Binary Property: the field holding the PDF to split.
  • Binary Input Data: on to take the document from that binary field.
  • Input File Contents: the text content, for the upload path instead.
Use cases
a scanner produces one PDF for forty forms, and each page has to be routed to a different folder or person.

Website

1 operation
17

Capture website

website.capture-website

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Renders a live web page and returns it as a PDF, a JPG or a PNG screenshot. This is the only operation that starts from a URL rather than a file.

Key parameters

  • URL: the address of the page to capture.
  • Output Format: PDF for a document, JPG or PNG for a screenshot.
  • Additional Options: a JSON dictionary of extra options for the task, built with the CloudConvert job builder.
Use cases
keep a dated capture of a competitor's pricing page every week, so the change is visible rather than remembered.

FAQ

CloudConvert and n8n, the questions that come next

01Is the CloudConvert n8n integration free?
On the n8n side, yes. There is no extra cost for using the node, whether n8n runs self hosted through Docker or npm, or on n8n Cloud. The catch is the install: CloudConvert is a community node, so it does not ship with n8n. You install the npm package @cloudconvert/n8n-nodes-cloudconvert, version 1.1.1, from Settings and then Community nodes, on a self hosted instance. n8n Cloud only accepts community nodes that have been verified. What CloudConvert itself charges for the jobs you run is a separate question, handled in your CloudConvert account.
02Which CloudConvert credentials does n8n need?
Two authentication methods are available on the node. OAuth2 is the recommended one: you approve the connection and CloudConvert hands a token to n8n. API Key is the other, where a key from your CloudConvert account is pasted into the credential. Either way, the credential is created once in the Credentials menu and then reused in every workflow that touches CloudConvert, because the node offers it in a dropdown. That also means a second file pipeline needs no second key, and rotating the key is done in one place instead of node by node.
03What are the limits of the CloudConvert node in n8n?
The node covers 17 operations across 5 resources, at node version 1, and that list is the boundary. Anything the CloudConvert API does beyond it is reachable with the HTTP Request node, which calls any endpoint and reuses the same credential through predefined authentication, so you are not stuck when an operation is missing. The other practical limit is the community node itself: it installs on a self hosted instance, and on n8n Cloud only verified community nodes are accepted. Fields marked as required stop the node when left empty, which is worth knowing before a long file chain.
04Can CloudConvert trigger an n8n workflow in real time?
No, because CloudConvert has no trigger node in n8n. A workflow that uses it starts with something else: a Schedule Trigger firing at a fixed interval, an n8n Webhook called by another service, or the trigger of another tool already in your setup. In practice that is rarely a problem, since the file usually arrives through that other tool anyway, an inbox, a form or a storage event. CloudConvert then sits in the middle of the workflow as an action, taking the binary file it is handed and returning the converted one.
05n8n or Make for CloudConvert?
It comes down to four criteria. Hosting: n8n can be self hosted with Docker or npm, or used on n8n Cloud, while Make is hosted only. Data control follows from that, since a self hosted instance keeps the files inside your own infrastructure, which matters when the documents are contracts or payslips. Cost model: Make bills per operation, and a file pipeline that splits a PDF into pages produces a lot of operations. Visual logic differs too, so the honest test is to rebuild one real file workflow in both and see which one you can read six months later.
