Blue n8n integrationAutomate Blue with n8n.

Can n8n drive a Blue board from end to end? Yes. The Blue n8n integration wraps the tool's GraphQL API in 10 operations, from spinning up a project off a template to tagging a record or firing a raw query. No Blue trigger exists, so a schedule or another app opens the workflow.

Why automate

What does the Blue n8n integration actually do?

The Blue n8n integration talks to Blue Project Management through the GraphQL API. Installed on a self-hosted instance, it hands a workflow 10 operations over one resource: projects, records (the todos and tasks of a board), custom fields, tags and user invites, plus an escape hatch for anything the node does not cover.

Scenario one, a board that fills itself. A weekly export sits in Google Sheets, n8n loops over the rows, and default.createRecord turns each line into a record in the right todo list, due date and assignee already set.

Scenario two, client onboarding without copy and paste. A signed deal calls default.createProject on a template, default.inviteUser adds the contact with the Client role, and the project name goes out in Slack so the team knows the board exists.

Scenario three, a Monday digest. default.getRecords pulls what is still open on a company, filtered by project and by text, and the result feeds a short summary instead of a screenshot of the board.

Ten operations cover the common ground, not the whole GraphQL schema. There are two ways out of that. default.customQuery sends a query you write, variables included, through the same credential. For anything living outside Blue, the HTTP Request node reaches any endpoint and reuses the predefined credential type.

Known limits, said plainly. Blue has no trigger node, so nothing pushes events into n8n: a Schedule Trigger at a fixed interval, or an n8n Webhook called by another service, starts the workflow. The node is a community package, which means a self-hosted instance, since n8n Cloud only accepts verified community nodes. Reads are paged, records through Limit and Skip, custom fields through Take and Skip, so a full export needs a loop. If the platform around the node is new to you, the n8n review covers what it does well and what it does not.

Connect

How do you connect Blue to n8n?

  1. 01

    Install the community package

Blue does not ship with n8n. On a self-hosted instance, whether it runs through Docker or npm, open Settings, then Community nodes, and install the npm package n8n-nodes-blue (version 0.1.8). n8n Cloud only accepts verified community nodes, so a Cloud workspace may not offer it at all. Once the install finishes, Blue appears in the node panel like any app node.

  2. 02

    Create the Blue credential once

Open the Credentials menu in n8n and build the Blue credential there rather than inside a single workflow. A credential created that way is reusable across every workflow on the instance, and the node offers it in its own dropdown, so nothing gets pasted twice. The node has no authentication selector: there is one credential and one way in. Give it a clear name if several Blue accounts share the same n8n instance.

  3. 03

Pick a company and run the node

Drop the Blue node on the canvas and choose an operation. Most of them start with Company, a resource locator, which means n8n lists the companies the credential can reach instead of asking for an identifier. Project usually comes next. Run List Companies once before building anything else: if the companies come back, the credential and the install are both fine.

Actions

What can the Blue node do?

The Blue node exposes 10 operations. For each one: the node as you configure it in n8n, the required fields, and our field notes.

01

Create a new project from a template

createProject

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

This one clones a template into a new project inside a company, so the board arrives with its structure in place instead of as an empty shell.

Key parameters

  • Company: the company that will hold the project, picked from the list the credential can reach.
  • Project Name: the name of the new project, often {{ $json.account }} when it comes from a CRM item.
  • Template Name or ID: the template to copy, picked from a list.
Use cases
a signed contract opens the delivery board for that client, with the same starting layout every time.
02

Create a new record todo task with custom fields

createRecord

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

A record is a todo or a task on a Blue board. This operation writes a new one into a chosen todo list and sets its custom fields in the same call.

Key parameters

  • Todo List: the list the record lands in, required, so an empty value stops the node.
  • Title: the text that shows on the card.
  • Due Date: optional, though a board without dates is hard to sort later.
  • Assignee Names or IDs: the users to assign, chosen from the list or passed as IDs through an expression.
Use cases
a bug report submitted on a form becomes a card in the triage list, already assigned and dated.
03

Execute a custom graph ql query

customQuery

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

When an operation is missing, this sends the GraphQL query you write straight to Blue and returns what the API answers, with no node update to wait for.

Key parameters

  • GraphQL Query: the query text itself, pasted into the field.
  • Variables (JSON): a JSON object handed to that query, handy for an identifier that changes on every run.
Use cases
reading a piece of data the dedicated operations never expose, or folding several reads into one call before the workflow branches.
04

Get records with advanced filtering

getRecords

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

The reading side of the board: it returns records for a company, narrowed down by project and by text, so a workflow acts on a slice and not on the whole backlog.

Key parameters

  • Company: required here, while Project stays optional, which makes a company wide search possible.
  • Search Term: the text a record has to contain to come back.
  • Show Completed: decides whether finished records join the results.
  • Limit: the ceiling on results, paired with Skip to walk a long board page by page.
Use cases
every Monday, list what is still open on a client project and turn it into a recap.
05

Invite a user to a project

inviteUser

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Sends an invitation by email and hands the person a role on the project, which removes the manual round trip of adding a collaborator once the board already exists.

Key parameters

  • Email: the address of the person to invite, in the user@example.com shape.
  • Role: Owner, Admin, Member, Client, Comment Only, View Only or Custom Role, from full access down to read only.
  • Custom Role Name or ID: the custom role defined in the project, which the node asks for alongside Role.
Use cases
a new client signs, the workflow builds the board and invites the contact with the Client role.
06

List all companies you have access to

getCompanies

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Returns every company the credential can reach. It is the call to make first when a workflow does not yet know which board it should be writing to.

Key parameters

  • Timeout (Ms): the request timeout in milliseconds, worth raising on a slow instance.
  • Return Full Response: returns the full GraphQL response, errors and extensions included, instead of the clean payload.
Use cases
a setup run that logs which companies a freshly created credential actually sees, before any write happens.
07

List custom fields in a project with detailed information

listCustomFields

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Custom fields carry whatever is specific to a team, and this operation lists them for a project with their details, identifiers included.

Key parameters

  • Sort Order: by created date, by name or by position, ascending or descending.
  • Take: how many fields come back, a number between 1 and 100.
  • Skip: how many to jump over, the other half of the paging pair.
Use cases
grabbing the identifier of the field a later Create Record call has to fill, without opening Blue to read it by hand.
08

List projects from a company

getProjects

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Lists the projects held by one company and nothing more. Short as it is, it mostly serves to turn a project name into the identifier the other operations expect.

Key parameters

  • Company: required, and the only field the operation asks for.
  • Return Full Response: leave it off unless a GraphQL error needs reading in the execution log.
Use cases
a nightly workflow walks every project of a company, then counts open records in each one.
09

Add tags to a record todo task

tagRecord

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Adds one or several tags to a record that already exists, so an automation can classify a card after the fact without touching its title or its description.

Key parameters

  • Record ID: the record to tag, in the record-123 shape, usually {{ $json.id }} from the read before it.
  • Tag Names or IDs: the tags to add, selected from the list or passed as IDs through an expression.
Use cases
a scoring step tags the records that crossed a threshold, so the board sorts itself before anyone looks at it.
10

Update a record todo task with custom fields

updateRecord

What you see in n8n

Notes & use cases

Edits an existing record: title, dates, position, color, people, tags and custom fields in one call, and it can move the card to another list.

Key parameters

  • Record ID: which record to change, required next to Company.
  • Todo List: set it to move the record to another list, leave it empty to keep the card where it is.
  • Color: a color code such as #FF5733 for cards that need to stand out.
  • Add Custom Field to Update: pairs a custom field with its value, a currency written as 100 USD, a checkbox as True or False.
Use cases
a deal changes stage in the CRM and the matching card slides to the next list with a fresh due date.

FAQ

Blue and n8n, the questions that come next

01Is the Blue n8n integration free?
Yes on the n8n side, with one condition. Blue is not shipped with n8n: it is a community node, the npm package n8n-nodes-blue in version 0.1.8, and someone has to install it from Settings, then Community nodes. That path exists on a self-hosted instance, whether it runs through Docker or npm. n8n Cloud only accepts verified community nodes, so a Cloud workspace may not be able to add it at all. Installing the package and running the node costs nothing extra in n8n itself. What a Blue account costs is a separate question, and this page does not answer it.
02What credentials does the Blue node need in n8n?
A Blue credential, created once. Open the Credentials menu in n8n, add the Blue credential there rather than inside a workflow, and every workflow on that instance can reuse it; the node then proposes it in its own dropdown. The node carries no authentication selector, so there is a single way in and no method to choose between. The exact fields of that credential are not documented in the catalog this page was built from, so read the package documentation when you fill the form. After saving, run List Companies once: if the companies come back, the credential works.
03What are the limits of the Blue node in n8n?
Three of them are worth knowing. First, the node exposes 10 operations over a single resource, which is a slice of the Blue GraphQL API and not the whole of it; Execute Custom GraphQL fills that gap with a query you write, and the HTTP Request node calls any endpoint while reusing the same predefined credential. Second, reads are paged: Get Records walks through Limit and Skip, List Custom Fields through Take and Skip, so a complete export takes a loop. Third, there is no Blue trigger, so nothing tells n8n when a record changed on the board.
04Does the Blue node react in real time?
No, because Blue has no trigger node in n8n. Nothing on the Blue side pushes an event into a workflow, so the workflow has to start somewhere else. Two patterns cover nearly everything. A Schedule Trigger fires at a fixed interval and calls Get Records, then an If node compares what came back against what the previous run stored. Or an n8n Webhook, a URL another service calls, starts the workflow the moment that service has news, and the Blue node writes the outcome to the board. The trigger of another app works the same way.
05n8n or Make for Blue?
It depends on where the data should live and how you want to pay for the runs. Make is hosted by Make, with no self-hosting option, and it bills per operation, so the cost tracks volume. n8n runs on n8n Cloud or on your own server through Docker or npm, and a workflow behaves the same in both, which matters when records carry client information you would rather keep in house. Blue is a community node, and community nodes only install on a self-hosted instance, so part of that choice is already made here. Make's visual builder is the gentler start; n8n leaves more room in expressions and code.
