Cloudways Velocity vs Netlify 2026
Short answer: pick Cloudways Velocity if you run a Node.js app that needs a server (an API, a server-rendered Next.js app, your own n8n) and you want a flat bill from $20 a month. Pick Netlify if you ship a static site or a light front-end, the free plan covers you, and nothing needs to run around the clock. We compared both on five criteria: Netlify scores 4.3/5, Velocity 4.2/5, and Velocity wins on predictable pricing and support.
Here is what decides most cases: these two products don't sell the same thing. Netlify sells credits. A production deploy costs 15 credits, a GB of bandwidth costs 20, and the free plan gives you 300 a month. Run out and your site gets paused. Velocity sells a server: 2 GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs and up to 5 apps for $20 a month on Starter, with Cloudflare Enterprise CDN included. It's a new Cloudways product (part of DigitalOcean), generally available since 2026, and we couldn't find independent user reviews of it yet. More on that below.
Managed Node.js on a server that stays on. Flat plans from $20/mo, up to 5 apps, n8n supported. No free plan, and still a young product.

Criterion by criterion, head to head
The same five criteria we score on every hosting tool. Each score is explained in its round, limits included.
01 Round 1: getting your first app live.
Netlify wins 4.7 to 4.3. For a static site, it's the shortest path we know: connect your Git repo, Netlify builds the site and serves it over HTTPS. Even its angriest reviewers praise that simplicity.
Velocity takes a few more clicks because it does more. You pick one of 12 preconfigured frameworks (or "Other"), then the Node version (22 or 24) for each app. Cloudways then runs Nginx and PM2 (the process manager that restarts your app if it crashes), so you never configure a web server. The Cloudways n8n guide shows the level of effort: a handful of environment variables (N8N_PORT=3000, N8N_PROTOCOL=https, N8N_PROXY_HOPS=1, your timezone) and it runs.
The catch: we can only judge Velocity's setup from the vendor's own docs. With no independent reviews yet, it gets 4.3, not more.
Pick Cloudways Velocity if your app needs a server and you want someone else to manage it.
Pick Netlify if you ship a static site and want the fewest steps.
02 Round 2: where the bill actually lands.
Velocity wins 4.4 to 3.8 because you know the bill before the month ends. Starter is $20 for 2 GB of RAM, 2 vCPUs, 5 apps, 3 TB of server bandwidth and 250 GB of CDN. Growth is $50 for 8 GB, 4 vCPUs and 14 apps. Only two things cost extra: CDN beyond quota at $0.02/GB and offsite backups at $0.033/GB. You can move up or down a plan anytime, no contract.
Netlify is cheaper at the very bottom, and that's its real edge: $0, then $9, then $20. But everything draws on one balance. A production deploy is 15 credits, a GB of bandwidth 20, a GB-hour of compute 10. Twenty deploys in a month burn the whole free allowance on their own. A site with 2 MB pages and 10,000 visitors moves about 20 GB, which is 400 credits, already over the free tier. Netlify also cut Pro from 5,000 to 3,000 credits a month in 2026.
Velocity's weak spot: it costs more than a server you run yourself, has no free plan, and Cloudways already raised its classic prices after the DigitalOcean acquisition (from $10 to $14 at entry level). There's no guarantee Velocity's grid stays put.
Pick Cloudways Velocity if you want a bill you can predict, even when traffic climbs.
Pick Netlify if your site reliably stays under 300 or 1,000 credits a month.
03 Round 3: what each one can actually do.
Netlify wins 4.6 to 4.0 on breadth. Around your site you get serverless functions, free form handling, serverless Postgres (Netlify Database, on credit-based plans), AI calls priced per model and Agent Runners. Pro adds unlimited members, private organization repos and 3+ concurrent builds.
There's a hard ceiling though: nothing runs continuously. A synchronous function gets a few seconds, a background function 15 minutes. No open WebSocket, no overnight job queue, no n8n.
Velocity starts exactly where Netlify stops. Your app runs on a persistent server on a 10 Gbps network, and Cloudways says there are no cold starts. The Business plan holds up to 150 apps, each with its own pipeline, domain, SSL and logs. Its limits: a young product, no built-in database described, and resources shared across apps on one plan. Five busy apps on Starter split the same 2 GB of RAM.
Pick Cloudways Velocity for Node apps that run continuously, n8n included.
Pick Netlify for a site plus short functions, forms and serverless Postgres.
04 Round 4: who answers when it breaks.
Velocity wins 4.3 to 3.8. Cloudways offers 24/7 support on every plan, from the $20 Starter, covering infrastructure and platform: the server, deploys, SSL. Bugs in your own code stay yours. On public review sites, Cloudways as a whole sits around 4.5 out of 5 across roughly 4,000 reviews, and support is what people praise most.
Two caveats that matter. Those reviews cover classic Cloudways hosting (WordPress and PHP), not Velocity. And there's a recurring complaint about being billed after cancelling: delete your server and keep the confirmation.
Netlify's priority email support starts on Personal, and dedicated 24/7 only exists on Enterprise. Public reviews are rough: 1.8 out of 5 across 79 reviews, with complaints about slow answers even on priority. Several 2026 threads on the official forum describe sites still paused after credits came back, with no staff reply.
Pick Cloudways Velocity if you want someone on call at any hour from the cheapest plan.
Pick Netlify if email support is enough, or you're heading to Enterprise.
05 Round 5: ready-made building blocks versus an open server.
Netlify wins 4.4 to 3.9 because its pieces are already wired in: forms, functions, Postgres, AI calls and Agent Runners all live on one platform and one credit bill. You don't write glue code to receive a form.
Velocity integrates differently: it runs any Node project that starts with a command, with 12 preconfigured frameworks and an "Other" option. The clearest example is n8n. Once it runs on your Velocity server, you get every n8n integration, and you pay for the server rather than per workflow run. The trade-off: forms, auth or a database are yours to add. Hence the lower score.
Pick Cloudways Velocity to run n8n or your own Node back end.
Pick Netlify for ready-made building blocks around a site.
The real cost, plan by plan
Both vendors price in US dollars. Velocity's prices exclude taxes and extra bandwidth, and tax depends on your country.
| Cloudways Velocity | Netlify | Edge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | None; 3-day trial on Starter and Professional | Free $0: 300 credits a month, hard cap, no top-ups | Netlify |
| Entry planVelocity's $20 buys a server; Netlify's $9 buys a credit envelope | Starter $20: 2 GB RAM, 2 vCPU, 5 apps, 3 TB server, 250 GB CDN | Personal $9: 1,000 credits, top-up of 500 credits for $5 | — |
| Mid tier | Professional $30 (4 GB, 8 apps), Growth $50 (8 GB, 4 vCPU, 14 apps) | Pro $20: 3,000 credits, unlimited members, top-up of 1,500 credits for $10 | — |
| Top tierVelocity lists every price, up to its biggest plan | Scale $100, Plus $150, Advanced $300, Business $400 (64 GB, 16 vCPU, 150 apps) | Enterprise on quote, 99.99% SLA | Cloudways Velocity |
| What costs extra | CDN over quota $0.02/GB; offsite backups $0.033/GB | Deploy 15 credits; bandwidth 20 credits/GB; compute 10 credits/GB-hour; 2 credits per 10,000 requests | Cloudways Velocity |
| Forms | Handle them in your app | Free, no credits used | Netlify |
Prices read on the official Cloudways Velocity and Netlify pages in 2026. Netlify revised its credit grid in 2026, so double-check before you buy.
Four projects, one month's bill
We ran four typical projects through the public price lists. Netlify credits use its published rates: 15 per deploy, 20 per GB of bandwidth.
| Cloudways Velocity | Netlify | Edge | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static portfolio, 5 deploys, 5 GB of traffic | Starter $20: oversized | 75 + 100 = 175 credits: free | Netlify |
| Small business site, 20 deploys, 20 GB | Starter $20 | 300 + 400 = 700 credits: Personal at $9 | Netlify |
| Content site, 30 deploys, 200 GB | Starter $20 (250 GB CDN included) | 450 + 4,000 = 4,450 credits: Pro $20 plus a $10 top-up, so $30 | Cloudways Velocity |
| n8n for a small team | Starter $20, enough for light use per Cloudways | Not possible: nothing runs continuously | Cloudways Velocity |
Based on public price lists, excluding serverless compute and taxes. An unexpected traffic spike mostly moves the Netlify column.
Switching hosts: what breaks most often
Your code moves as is, straight from Git. What breaks is everything Netlify did around it. Here are the traps people report when they migrate, and what they become on a Node server like Velocity.
| Cloudways Velocity | Netlify | |
|---|---|---|
| DNS | Recreate every record, MX, SPF and DKIM included, before switching nameservers | If Netlify runs your DNS, your mail records (MX, SPF, DKIM) live there too and don't move on their own |
| Redirects | Rewrite them in your app or framework config | Rules in netlify.toml and _redirects don't come along |
| Functions | Become routes in your Node app (Express, Fastify, Next.js) | Serverless functions tied to Netlify |
| Forms | Handle them in your app or with a form service | Built-in form handling |
| Auth | Add your new domain at your auth provider | Login redirects still point to the old domain |
| Environment variables | Re-enter them app by app | Set in the Netlify dashboard |
Keep the Netlify site live until DNS has switched everywhere, and note when your credit cycle ends so you don't pay for an extra month.
Pick by your situation
Pick Cloudways Velocity if...
- Your Node.js app has to stay on and answer at any hour, no wake-up delay
- You want to self-host n8n and pay for a server, not for runs
- You have several small apps (clients, internal tools) to put on one bill
- Your traffic can jump and you don't want a bill that follows the meter
- You want 24/7 infrastructure support from the entry plan
- You're fine with a new product that has little user track record so far
Pick Netlify if...
- You ship a static site, blog or portfolio that fits in 300 credits
- You want to start at $0 without a credit card
- Your server-side needs fit in functions that run for a few seconds
- You want forms and serverless Postgres without installing anything
- You watch usage and turn on auto top-up to avoid a pause
- A whole team needs to deploy on one account (unlimited members on Pro)
Six hosts worth a look
Velocity and Netlify don't cover every case. If you want a more generous free tier, a cheaper server, or a host built around Next.js, these six do better on one specific point. Each card states its limit too. Going further: our Netlify alternatives and the Plesk vs Netlify comparison.
The alternatives
Vercel: closest to Netlify, built around Next.js
Front-endVercel plays on Netlify's turf. Hobby is free with 100 GB of transfer and 1 million requests, but it's limited to personal, non-commercial use. As soon as the site serves a business, you need Pro: $20 per member per month with $20 of usage included, then pay as you go (for example $0.15 per GB of transfer).
Best for: front-end teams, especially on Next.js. The limit: the free plan bans commercial projects, and the bill grows with headcount. The tip: check the commercial-use rule before you put a client site on Hobby.
- Price
- Hobby $0, Pro $20 per member
- Best for
- Next.js front-ends
- Limit
- Free plan is non-commercial
Render: persistent servers, with a free tier that sleeps
Cheap serverRender runs persistent apps like Velocity but bills per instance. Starter is $7 (512 MB, 0.5 CPU), Standard $25 (2 GB, 1 CPU), Pro $85. There's a free tier with 750 hours a month, but the instance sleeps after 15 minutes without traffic and takes about a minute to wake up.
Best for: one API or app on a tight budget. The limit: the free Postgres database expires after 30 days (plus a 14-day grace period). The tip: for several apps, add up the instances and compare with one Velocity plan that holds them all.
- Price
- Free, then from $7 per instance
- Best for
- One app, small budget
- Limit
- Free tier sleeps
Railway: pay by the second for what you use
Usage-basedRailway bills real usage by the second: about $10 per GB of RAM per month, $20 per vCPU per month, $0.05 per GB of egress. Hobby is $5 with $5 of usage included, Pro $20 with $20 included. A $5 trial over 30 days gets you started.
Best for: developers who want a server without paying for a whole plan. The limit: the bill follows usage, so it's less predictable than a flat plan. The tip: a small app that's idle most of the time can fit inside the included $5.
- Price
- Hobby $5, Pro $20, then usage
- Best for
- Small, bursty apps
- Limit
- Variable bill
Cloudflare Pages and Workers: static hosting for next to nothing
Generous free tierThis is where most people leaving Netlify end up. Pages is free with 500 builds a month, one build at a time and 20,000 files per site. Workers Free gives 100,000 requests a day, and Workers Paid is $5 a month for 10 million requests. Static asset requests are free and unlimited. One developer took his bill from $19 a month (around 280 GB of traffic) to $0.
Best for: high-traffic static sites. The limit: Netlify functions need rewriting (handler becomes onRequest, process.env becomes env). The tip: after the DNS import, check MX, SPF and DKIM records by hand, they often go missing.
- Price
- Free, Workers Paid $5 a month
- Best for
- High-traffic static
- Limit
- Functions to rewrite
DigitalOcean App Platform: the parent company, more bare-bones
ContainersDigitalOcean owns Cloudways. Its App Platform hosts 3 static sites for free (1 GiB of transfer each) and containers from $5 (512 MiB), $12 (1 GiB), $25 (2 GiB) or $50 (4 GiB, 2 vCPU). Extra transfer is $0.02 per GiB.
Best for: a single app when you don't need Velocity's 24/7 support or Cloudflare Enterprise CDN. The limit: one app per container, so several apps mean several bills. The tip: at 2 GB of RAM, compare $25 for one app with $20 for five apps on Velocity Starter.
- Price
- 3 free static sites, containers from $5
- Best for
- One app, no managed support
- Limit
- One bill per app
Sevalla: Kinsta's application hosting
Apps and staticIf you're looking for Kinsta application hosting, it now redirects to Sevalla, Kinsta's dedicated product. Apps and databases start at $5 a month. Static sites are free with 100 GB of bandwidth, 600 build minutes and up to 100 sites.
Best for: teams that want a roomy free static tier and paid apps on one platform. The limit: a recently renamed product with little user feedback so far. The tip: 100 free static sites is handy for an agency that keeps a lot of campaign pages online.
- Price
- Free static, apps from $5
- Best for
- Agencies, static plus apps
- Limit
- Little track record

Frequently asked questions
Is Netlify really free?
Yes, but it's capped at 300 credits a month with no top-ups. That goes fast: 20 production deploys use all of it, and so does 15 GB of bandwidth. Tip: batch your changes and deploy less often, since every deploy costs 15 credits whatever its size. What happens when Netlify credits run out?
On the free plan, the site is paused and stops serving visitors until the next cycle. Netlify sends alerts at 50%, 75% and 100%. On a paid plan, the pause happens too if auto top-up is off. Turn it on if the site serves customers: 500 credits cost $5 on Personal, 1,500 credits $10 on Pro.Can I host an Express back end or Node API on Netlify?
Only in small pieces. Netlify turns your code into serverless functions that get a few seconds to respond (15 minutes in the background). An Express server that stays open, WebSockets or a job queue don't fit that model. For those you need a persistent server such as Velocity, Render or Railway. Can I run n8n on Netlify or Cloudways Velocity?
Not on Netlify: n8n has to run continuously. On Velocity, yes, it's one of the 12 preconfigured frameworks. The Cloudways guide starts from a ready-to-fork n8n repo, Node 22 and a few variables (N8N_PORT=3000, N8N_PROTOCOL=https, N8N_PROXY_HOPS=1). Two traps: the guide runs on SQLite while PostgreSQL is recommended for production, and you need N8N_WEBHOOK_URL if webhooks show the wrong address. Also respect n8n's Sustainable Use license. Is Cloudways Velocity the same as Cloudways?
No. Classic Cloudways mostly hosts WordPress and PHP on DigitalOcean, Vultr, AWS or Google Cloud servers. Velocity is Cloudways' Node.js hosting, the former "Cloudways Node.js" renamed. Almost every Cloudways review you'll read is about the classic product, not Velocity. Are there user reviews of Cloudways Velocity?
No independent ones yet: we found none on Reddit, Hacker News or forums. The product is new, and the only publicly named customer is UK agency Regal IT, which moved a Shopify app to production on it. Use the 3-day trial to deploy your real app, and watch RAM usage before you choose a plan.Does Cloudways Velocity have hidden costs?
Not hidden, but plan for them. CDN beyond quota costs $0.02 per GB and offsite backups $0.033 per GB. Prices exclude taxes. And all apps on a plan share its RAM, CPU and bandwidth: five busy apps on Starter may push you to Professional ($30) or Growth ($50).Is there a Cloudways Velocity promo code?
Yes. The code Hackceleration takes 30% off your first three Cloudways Velocity bills. It is applied automatically when you sign up through this link, and it stacks with the 3-day free trial on Starter and Professional.Netlify or Vercel for a business site?
Both work, but Vercel's free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial projects only. A business site has to go Pro, at $20 per member per month. Netlify's free plan has no such rule, but it caps at 300 credits and pauses when it runs dry.
Put your real app on one, then decide
Netlify is free to start; Cloudways Velocity offers a 3-day trial on Starter and Professional. The most reliable test: deploy your real project on the one that matches its shape, a server for a Node app or n8n, Netlify for a static site, and check usage after a few days.
